Hack Your Thanksgiving Breakfast (or Christmas)
When you think Thanksgiving, you are thinking about dinner, whether that be a middle of the afternoon, just past the lunch hour dinner, or an evening dinner. Little attention is paid to breakfast on this very-edible holiday, which is why it’s so important to think about it in advance. Even though the morning meal isn’t the priority, the household will need to eat, especially if there are kids involved, as they will be starving while they wait for the turkey to cook. Whatever you do, don’t even consider trying to make a big breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. Not only is time an issue, but the space will be an issue too. If your house is anything like mine, the stove will be overloaded well before eight a.m. And don’t plan on letting someone else cook breakfast. The last thing you need is more than one person trying to prepare two dueling meals at one time.
The best ideas for dealing with breakfast on Thanksgiving morning are also some of the most simple.
1. Let them eat junk!
So, maybe it’s not the healthiest idea, but during the holiday season, it’s likely there are plenty of treats, from pastries to flavored popcorn sitting around the house. If your kids have been begging you for chocolate chip cookies every morning for breakfast, this is the day to let them go for it. It won’t kill them. It’s only one day a year.
2. Let them eat simple.
Cold cereal. Milk. And off to the living room with you. Or granola bars and fresh fruit. Simple staples are simply easy.
3. Have it on hand.
Go out a day or two before the big day and buy for breakfast. Donuts, bagels, whatever your family and house guests will eat.
4. Make it in advance.
If you simply insist on having something grand for Thanksgiving breakfast, have something grand that can be made in advance. Try one of these delicious recipes for the perfect morning-of meal.
