Why Green on Saint Patrick’s Day?

Green has long been considered the national color of Ireland.

During the time of the American Revolution, the British ruling classes feared that the notion of liberty would spread within their own population. It was true in Ireland. Green has long been associated with Ireland’s revolutionaries.

Around the time of the Revolution, around the year 1776, the wearing of the color was actually barred by the country’s authorities. Green was the color of sympathy for independence.

That remains to this day.
