April 18th is World Heritage Day
Each year April 18th is known as World Heritage Day. UNESCO began this recognition to remind us of our common purpose as nations who are diverse but unified. Although, it actually started with ICOMOS, the International Council for Monuments and Sites, holding of the “International Day for Monuments and Sites” in 1982. It was later in 1983 that it was approved by UNESCO.
World Heritage Day represents an opportunity for citizens of nations to work together with government and many cultures, languages, traditions, and divergent inheritances in renewing their call to action and recommitting to preserving the world’s heritage.
The urgency of the call to action is even more relevant today with the world’s heritage at risk from globalization.
In the UK, fifty flags of World Heritage Site countries are to be flown from the Scott Monument.
