If you are like most people, you look forward to Thanksgiving dinner but dread the overstuffed belly you are left with afterwards. If you want this year to be different, check out these tips on how to avoid overeating at Thanksgiving.

Eat breakfast and lunch.

If you show up at Thanksgiving dinner with an empty belly then you are certain to overeat. Instead, eat the way your normally would so that you do not show up at the dinner table famished.

Drink your water.

If you want to be sure to eat less, then have a couple of glasses of water before you hit the Thanksgiving buffet.  It will help to fill your stomach so that you do not over-fill it with turkey!

Eat an appetizer if you can.

If your family puts out a veggie tray or something similar, try munching on that before the main course. If you can snack on a healthy appetizer before the main course you are certain to eat less.

Get a smaller plate.

Instead of filling up a dinner size plate, as your host for a smaller salad plate or saucer. That way you will trick your mind with a full plate, even though it is a smaller plate. The end result is getting pleasantly full without overdoing it.

Or don’t fill the entire plate.

If you can’t get a smaller plate, then just don’t fill up your plate.  Less food on your plate means less chance of over eating.

Don’t go back for seconds.

Do not go back for seconds! Doing so only means that you WILL end up over eating! Give your food time to digest and you will see that you are full.

Choose carefully.

Make wise choices when picking what food goes on your plate. If you are trying to decide between two items, go for the one that you get to eat less often. That way you to get to enjoy something that you normally do not eat and you do not have to worry about feeling terrible later due to over eating.

If you eat dessert, you only need one treat!

Most Thanksgiving dinners will have an assortment of desserts. However, that does not mean that you have to sample all of them! Instead, pick out only one dessert to have. And if you are already full, then skip the dessert. You can also ask your host for dessert to go!
